ABOUT US

The Centre for Science and Technology Innovations (CSTI) is a Trust registered in 1998 by the Registrar of Societies under the Trustees Act Chapter 167, Laws of Kenya. It is located at the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, Utalii House, Utalii Street, 8th Floor, Nairobi, Kenya.

It has six Trustees, namely:
  • Prof. Shem O. Wandiga - Managing Trustee
  • Prof. Eric O. Odada - Trustee
  • Justice Prof. Jacton B. Ojwang - Trustee
  • Dr. Maggie Opondo - Trustee
  • Dr. Dan Olago - Trustee

The Centre for Science has been working towards the improvement of science teaching and learning by holding training workshops for teachers in different provinces in the country.

 

The Centre is appealing for donors to help needy schools purchase the kits, on its part, the Centre will facilitate the training of teachers and technical back up on the microscience kits and experiments at no extra cost to the donor or the school.

 

How to Budget for a School

  • Ideally one equipment kit per learner; the minimum recommended ratio is 1kit to four learners. The cost of one kit is Kshs. 640/-
  • One Chemical Kit will suffice for 50 - 100 learners for a period of one year. Individual bottles may also be replenished. The cost of one Chemicals Kit is Kshs 6,500/-

The aims of the Centre are:

• To promote innovation in science teaching at the secondary and tertiary education levels through the incorporation of new trends in the sciences.

• To enhance the transfer of science and technology research to distressed communities of Kenya for economic development.

• To promote constructive linkages between science and industry for the enhancement of economic development.

• To carry out any other or further activity that is incidental or ancillary to the above.

• To promote the effective use of science and technology in the food production process.

• To facilitate initiatives to achieve greater efficiency through the adoption of good scientific principles in the provision of various categories of service.

• To promote the use of information and communication technology in the promotion of science and technology.

• To collaborate with other centres with similar objectives and aims.

• To act as a clearing house of knowledge and skills between researchers/research institutions and end-users, including policy makers.

Integrating Vulnerability And Adaptation To Climate Change Into Sustainable Development Policy Planning And Implememtation In Eastern And Southern Africa Project Document
INTRODUCTION KENYA:
Pilot Project Design: Increasing Community Resilience to Drought in Makueni District.
The goal of this project is:
Reduced Risk and vulnerability to climate-induced drought through participatory activities to evolve sustainable climate adaptation strategies in Kisau Division
. The objectives are:
  1. to increase household food security through increased livelihood resilience and reduced vulnerability to drought
  2. to reduce poverty through improved livelihoods
  3. to facilitate integration of climate change and adaptation into policy development and planning

Maize Plantation

Implementation of the field level projects will be undertaken in partnership with the ongoing Arid Lands Resources Management Project (ALRMP) activities on drought management in rainfed mixed farming livelihood zone of Makueni district. Through these activities the project will demonstrate at the field level how to increase resilience to drought and thereby reduce vulnerability to climate change, address poverty reduction and improve livelihoods. The activities will be highly consultative and will be implemented with the community. The specific field activities that will be carried out are outlined in the logframe. The up-scaling component will link information from the field project to facilitation of policy review at the district and national level.
The relevant stakeholders are communities within the district, government ministries (Office of the President, Agriculture, Planning and National Development, Environment and Natural Resources, Finance, and Water) Kenya Food Security Steering Group, Regional Development Organizations), Parliament and Cabinet.

The main outcomes of the project will be:
  • Farmers’ handbook
  • Community capacity in seed bulking enhanced
  • Cropping Calendar in local language incorporating traditional knowledge
  • Sand dam(s) and shallow well(s) constructed
  • Suitable seed varieties identified
  • Drip irrigation introduced
  • Improved organic fertilizer use through biogas digesters
  • Policy briefs - Creating awareness and facilitate integration of climate change and adaptation into policy
  • Self-help groups credit system strengthened
  • Downscaled climate and weather forecasts
  • Project reports
The project will start in March 2006 and will end in February 2009. Various activities will be undertaken, adhering to timelines and obligations.
